Two countries announce travel ban on US citizens
Two countries have announced new travel restrictions on US citizens after being included in the latest expansion of America’s travel ban policy under Donald Trump.
The former president has consistently tightened immigration controls during his time in office, and earlier this month confirmed that additional countries would face either full or partial restrictions on entering the United States. This latest move brings the total number of affected nations to 39.
Under the updated policy, citizens from several countries are now subject to strict visa limitations or outright bans. Nations facing full travel bans include Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Yemen, Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan, Venezuela, Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, South Sudan, and Syria.
Meanwhile, partial restrictions will apply to travellers from Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Dominica, Gabon, The Gambia, Malawi, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Tonga, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
All of these measures are set to take effect on January 1, 2026.
Defending the decision, the White House stated that the administration believes it has a responsibility to protect Americans by closely monitoring who is permitted to enter the country.
In response, Mali and Burkina Faso have announced reciprocal action, confirming that US nationals will no longer be allowed to enter their territories.
Mali’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the move was based on equal treatment between nations, explaining that the same conditions placed on Malian citizens by the US would now be applied to Americans. The statement was reported by The Guardian.
Burkina Faso echoed this stance shortly afterwards. Foreign Affairs Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traoré confirmed the decision, saying it was guided by the “principle of reciprocity,” according to BBC News.
These announcements follow similar action by Niger, which recently declared a permanent ban on issuing visas to US citizens, effectively blocking American travellers from entering the country indefinitely. A diplomatic source told regional media that the policy applies to all US nationals without exception.
This is not the first time such measures have been taken. Back in June, Chad also suspended visa issuance for Americans after it appeared on an earlier version of the US travel ban list.
